Consolidating iphoto libraries

If you already have a busy Photos library, you’re going to be working with two different image libraries now, which is why it’s generally best to allow Photos app to pull in your i Photo or Aperture library on first launch.

If you’d like to merge two different libraries, well, at the moment, there is no way to directly perform a merging of an i Photo library with a Photos library without manually intervening and importing photos on your own.

You can do that through the File Import menu item, or by dragging and dropping images from one library into another using the file system.

Being able to directly merge libraries together would be pretty useful, so it’s possible that such a feature could be introduced into future versions of Photos for OS X.

Time Machine does a great job of backing up photos, but it's not archival.

By design, Time Machine favors removing the oldest files it contains to make room for newer ones.

After you confirm that your unified image library works correctly, you can remove all other i Photo libraries out of Mac’s hard disk.

But it is a concern if you want to keep long-term copies of items, such as your photos. The great thing about this app is the way it allows you to divide libraries into different aspects or themes. So, for example, you can have one folder for work images and one for personal photos on different Macs.If you use Apple's Time Machine, then the libraries used by Photos and i Photo are automatically backed up as part of every Time Machine backup that is performed. While that's a good starting point, you may want to consider additional backups, and here’s why.

Once the images are downloaded to your Mac, the flash storage device is more than likely erased to make room for a new batch of photos.
